Andrew Buckley

Chair of Board of Trustees since 2019

Expand

Andrew BuckleyMy love affair with the Valley began in 1999 when I first moved to the North East. I lived on the Quayside and used to walk to work in South Gosforth, following the path of the Ouseburn.

As a volunteer at the Trust, I am a Victoria Tunnel guide and have also been working with the Heritage Officer to develop, pilot and deliver a new above-ground walk – Back to the Future – which focuses on both the heritage and regeneration of the Lower Ouseburn Valley.  I have been impressed with the range of the Trust's work and the role it plays in Ouseburn Valley and I am keen to extend my involvement and use my skills and experience to help its work as a Trustee and as Chair of its Board of Trustees.

I bring a strong interest in industrial history and a genuine passion for the Valley, combined with a business career which has spanned 35 years. My background is in marketing and communications, sales and business development and, latterly, general management. Most recently, as Chief Executive of RTC North, I have been involved in bidding for, securing and delivering a number of large-scale business support programmes, funded by the European Union, Department for Communities and Local Government and Innovate UK.

Heather Richardson

Heritage Officer since September 2018

Expand
Heather Richardson

Heather has extensive experience in museums, including the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford, and is currently also working one day a week as Regional Conservator for the North East, employed by Bowes Museum.   As well as her work in conservation and heritage she has a personal interest in architecture and the built environment and a passion for enabling buildings and communities to tell their stories.

When Heather first visited Tyneside she remembers looking over the Ouseburn Valley from the Metro bridge and being so captivated by the sight that when they moved to Newcastle they chose to live just off City Stadium to enjoy all that Ouseburn offers.

Tours of the Victoria Tunnel will bring to life the stories of people who lived and worked in the Valley, especially during Victorian times and the second world war.

Our summer programme of walks will take you on journeys through parts of the Valley you may never have seen and reveal the past through visiting what remains in the present.

The glorious Georgian St Ann's Church on City Road is open on the first and third Saturdays of the month during the summer (May - September). Call in for a coffee and a look round at this beautiful building, and its active community.

Our friends the Newcastle City Guides have an extensive programme of guided walks including at least one each year through the Ouseburn Valley.

There are open days and walks for Heritage Open Days (second weekend in September)

      Tunnel history

The Victoria Tunnel runs beneath the city from the Town Moor down to the Tyne. It was built in 1842 to transport coal from Leazes Main Colliery to riverside staithes (jetties) ready for loading onto ships. In 1939, it was converted into an air-raid shelter to protect hundreds of Newcastle citizens during World War II. A programme of repairs in 2007-8 was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and the TyneWear Partnership, and part of the Tunnel is now open to the public.
