Join a whole host of knowledgeable, enthusiastic guides as they explore a different theme on (what we hope will be) sunny Tuesday evenings throughout the summer. From the history of our local pleasure gardens to exploring Ouseburn's murder mysteries, we've got a themed walk to suit everyone. Walks cost £5 per person | Booking is essential Jump to the booking calendar Ouseburn Summer Walks programme for 2021 Ouseburn Potteries c1780-1914 | SOLD OUT Tuesday 20th July, 7pm Maling Pottery is justly famous but its success and longevity means that other, equally important, earthenware factories remain relatively unknown. This walk will identify the sites and histories of some of those other important Ouseburn potteries, together with the smaller factories that supplied the colours that decorated the tableware that these potteries produced. Dissent and Nonconformity – the Ouseburn Connections Tuesday 27th July 7pm Overlooked by the pagodas of the old Ouseburn School are the remains of one of the largest 19th-century burial grounds in Newcastle. This was a nonconformist cemetery, but what do we mean by nonconformist? This walk, around a few of the remaining nonconformist sites and monuments in Ouseburn and the Quayside hopes to answer that question and looks at the history, impact, and influence of these movements. Book your walks here: Buy Tickets Previous walks The Life and Pubs of Jocker Wood (1854-1937) | SOLD OUT Tuesday 22nd June 7pm * This walk is free to attend but booking is essential and we welcome donations. This walk, in memory of Eric Larkham, will trace the life of Jocker Wood, one of Ouseburn's most accomplished sportsmen and a publican of no less than three local public houses including the Cumberland Arms. Led by Mike Greatbatch. Meet at Ouseburn Trust offices, ends at the Cumberland Arms. Walking the Ouseburn from Gosforth to the Valley Tuesday 29th June 6pm This delightful walk follows the path of the Ouseburn from South Gosforth to the Tyne. Discover Jesmond Dene, Armstrong Park and Heaton Park, which were laid out as private pleasure gardens in the mid-19th Century. By way of contrast, the walk finishes in the Lower Ouseburn Valley, the very heart of Newcastle’s industrial heritage. Led by Andrew Buckley. Meet at South Gosforth Metro Station, ends at the Tyne Bar. Bridges over troubled waters? Tuesday 6th July, 7pm The Ouseburn might look like an insignificant river, but it and its valley form a substantial feature in the landscape and a major barrier to east-west transport. Crossing it and taming it present formidable challenges and over the years a variety of solutions have been engineered to overcome them. Led by Iain Kitt. Murder in Ouseburn: Fact and Fiction | SOLD OUT Tuesday 13th July, 7pm Based on a combination of historic research and contemporary fiction this walk will take in the sites of Ouseburn murders and attempted murders, real and imagined, in all their gory detail. Led by Diane Humblestone and Heather Richardson. Meet at the Ouseburn Trust offices.
