Latest Events Back to the Future Guided Walk of Ouseburn *Corona virus Update* please note we have suspended guided walks until July. We will keep under review the re-opening of Back to the Future guided walks following government health guidance. Discover the history of the Ouseburn Valley, its more recent regeneration story and what the future holds for it, all in 90 minutes! Our new guided walk will take you Back to the Future in Ouseburn! The Ouseburn Valley is often considered the birthplace of the industrial revolution in Newcastle. Since the seventeenth century it has been home to glass manufacturing, followed by potteries, flax and flour mills, tanneries, abattoirs, lead factories and small-scale shipbuilding in the nineteenth century. Industries were interspersed with workers' housing and pubs. By the mid-twentieth century many of the local industries had either closed or moved out, the housing had been demolished under slum clearance, as had most of the pubs, and the area presented a sorry neglected combination of empty buildings, derelict sites, scrapyards, warehousing, and car related businesses. This all started to change with the introduction of artists and musicians to the area in the mid 1980’s, new organisations followed, partnerships developed, regeneration programmes were initiated and the area's heritage and character reclaimed and promoted. The central area around Lime Street was declared a Conservation Area in 2000. Now Ouseburn is a thriving urban village and Newcastle's Cultural Quarter.
