On 7th April 1842 a grand party was held in the Assembly Rooms to celebrate the official opening of the Victoria Tunnel to great acclaim.175 anniversary party

Today on 7th April 2017 our Volunteer Tunnel Guides are celebrating the Victoria Tunnel’s 175th anniversary by holding another grand party in the Assembly Rooms to celebrate the amazing engineering feat that is the Victoria Tunnel.

Last year our Victoria Tunnel Guides re-enacted the workers’ party at the Unicorn Inn on the Bigg Market (shown in the photo above). This year Volunteer Guide Amanda Hepburn has been leading the planning for a celebration of the magnificent workmanship and foresight of a remarkable engineer.

There will be Victorian Music Hall entertainment from 7pm – songs, stories and music hall – and a four course meal. The evening will include a special performance of The Spital Tongues Tunnel song, written in 1842 by Tyneside bard, Robert (Bobby) Nunn.
